• Avatar-A: Scientists prepare for human brain transplant

Following the steps of James Cameron, a young Russian media mogul has launched his own Avatar project. Dmitry Itskov does not want to explore a new planet, though: he just plans to make a human brain immortal by transplanting it into a robot's body. The Avatar-A project's aim, Itskov says, is to create an autonomous system of human brain nutrition, preserve nerve connections so that the brain does not degrade or die, making it possible to transplant a human head onto an artificial body.

5 Things Women Can Do That Men Can’t! Description: Men and women come in different sizes, races, complexions and ability but they are able to complement each other in spite of their many contradictions. For women, their uniqueness lies in their rare ability to understand emotional expressions, juggle multiple tasks at will among other things. Today, we will dive into 5 Things Women Can Do That Men Can’t and set women apart from men and elevate them to goddesses in their own right. So lets begin! 1. Evolution Is Making Women Hotter From Ancient Egyptian ruler Cleopatra to reality TV personality Kim Kardashian, women just seem to be growing more and more beautiful with time – and scientists predict an even greater surge in numbers of women based on evolution. Research reveals that attractive women are 16% more likely to have more children as compared to their less attractive counterparts. A 2006 study found that good-looking parents were more likely to have daughters, and it is argued that this is an evolutionary tactic - programmed into our DNA – that is meant to help each sex survive. Women inheriting physical attractiveness over generations means that on average, women will be more attractive than men. 2. Women Are Scientifically Better At Multitasking In case you’ve been wondering about women’s natural capacity to handle multiple tasks at a go, science have got you covered. Scientists ran tests on the brains of 949 men and women to map the interconnections between different parts of the brain. The results showed that women have a much stronger connection between the left and right sides of their brains, while men have stronger connections between the front and the back of the brain. What does that say about women and multitasking? These different interconnections make women better at multitasking and men better at single, more complex tasks. 3. Women Have A Better Sense Of Smell Scientists have been trying to solve the puzzle of women overshadowing their male counterparts in smell-related testing. Research conducted in Brazil examining brains from seven men and 11 women who are recently deceased revealed that on average, women have 43 percent more cells than men in their olfactory bulbs in their brain. Olfactory bulbs are responsible for control of the sense of smell. Researchers also point to the fact that the increased sense of smell in women is naturally linked to experiences and emotions making this smell superiority cognitive rather than perceptual. During pregnancy, women are said to experience an increased sense of smell owing to their pregnancy hormones. 4. Women Can Have Multiple “Os” Most men are biologically incapable of continuous climaxing without an adequate rest period. According to scientific discovery, a chemical compound called oxytocin is released into the body which causes a five to thirty-minute recovery period in most young healthy males. Not so with women who can go on to experience consecutive climaxes without requiring a recovery period. Women’s body do not produce the oxytocin chemical and so their bodies can continue to perform at an optimum level and result in multiple “Os”. 5. Women Have A Better Understanding of Emotions According to a 2009 study commissioned by the University of Montreal, Olivier Collignon found that amongst 23 men and 23 women asked to identify emotions of actors using sometimes contradictory stimuli (i.e. a voice that showed fear but a facial expression marking disgust), women were quicker in their responses and better able to distinguish the emotions more accurately. The study also determined that the female participants responded more quickly when the actor was female. Therefore, women possess a higher aptitude for understanding expressions and emotions than men. Collignon also adds that other factors besides biology play a major role in the study, “These studies should not rule out the fact that culture and socialization do play a powerful role in determining gender differences in the processing of emotional expressions.” Background Music: Kevin MacLeod ~ On My Way : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diYafFSX2Og For copyright matters please contact us: OfficialAmerikano@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Thank you so much for watching! Dr. Suzanne Simard is a professor with the UBC Faculty of Forestry, where she lectures on and researches the role of mycorrhizae and mycorrhizal networks in tree species migrations with climate change disturbance. Networks of mycorrhizal fungal mycelium have recently been discovered by Professor Suzanne Simard and her graduate students to connect the roots of trees and facilitate the sharing of resources in Douglas-fir forests of interior British Columbia, thereby bolstering their resilience against disturbance or stress and facilitating the establishment of new regeneration. Dr. Simard writes: Mycorrhizal fungi form obligate symbioses with trees, where the tree supplies the fungus with carbohydrate energy in return for water and nutrients the fungal mycelia gather from the soil; mycorrhizal networks form when mycelia connect the roots of two or more plants of the same or different species. Graduate student Kevin Beiler has uncovered the extent and architecture of this network through the use of new molecular tools that can distinguish the DNA of one fungal individual from another, or of one tree's roots from another. He has found that all trees in dry interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca) forests are interconnected, with the largest, oldest trees serving as hubs, much like the hub of a spoked wheel, where younger trees establish within the mycorrhizal network of the old trees. Through careful experimentation, recent graduate Francois Teste determined that survival of these establishing trees was greatly enhanced when they were linked into the network of the old trees.Through the use of stable isotope tracers, he and Amanda Schoonmaker, a recent undergraduate student in Forestry, found that increased survival was associated with belowground transfer of carbon, nitrogen and water from the old trees. This research provides strong evidence that maintaining forest resilience is dependent on conserving mycorrhizal links, and that removal of hub trees could unravel the network and compromise regenerative capacity of the forests. In wetter, mixed-species interior Douglas-fir forests, graduate student Brendan Twieg also used molecular tools to discover that Douglas-fir and paper birch (Betula papyrifera) trees can be linked together by species-rich mycorrhizal networks. We found that the mycorrhizal network serves as a belowground pathway for transfer of carbon from the nutrient-rich deciduous trees to nearby regenerating Douglas-fir seedlings. Moreover, we found that carbon transfer was enhanced when Douglas-fir seedlings were shaded in mid-summer, providing a subsidy that may be important in Douglas-fir survival and growth, thus helping maintain a mixed forest community during early succession. This is not a one-way subsidy, however; graduate Leanne Philip discovered that Douglas-fir supported their birch neighbours in the spring and fall by sending back some of this carbon when the birch was leafless. This back-and-forth flux of resources according to need may be one process that maintains forest diversity and stability. Mycorrhizal networks may be critical in helping forest ecosystems deal with climate change. Maintaining the biological webs that stabilize forests may help conserve genetic resources for future tree migrations, ensure that forest carbon stocks remain intact on the landscape, and conserve species diversity. UBC graduate student Marcus Bingham is finding that maintaining mycorrhizal webs may be more important for the regeneration and stability of the dry than wet interior Douglas-fir forests, where resources are more limited and climate change is expected to have greater impacts. Helping the landscape adapt to climate change will require more than keeping existing forests intact, however. Many scientists are concerned that species will need to migrate at a profoundly more rapid rate than they have in the past, and that humans can facilitate this migration by planting tree species adapted to warm climates in new areas. UBC graduate student Brendan Twieg is starting new research to help us understand whether the presence of appropriate mycorrhizal symbionts in foreign soils may limit the success of tree migrations, and if so, to help us design practices that increase our success at facilitating changes in these forests.
